July 20 the New Single is Out Now

Its a triple whammy of treats on the Bocca blog today - celebrating the release and red carpet arrival of minty new single July 20 - coming at you in a fistful of five mixes. So what's on the menu?

An exclusive interview The Dandy Warhols Courtney Taylor-Taylor
who has post produced and mixed The Wolfmen's new Album ' Married to The Eiffel Tower '

Two mixes by Courtney of July 20 one he did with Jacob Portrait and the other with Jeremy Sherrer.

A preview of the follow up single ' Cat Green Eyes ' .

Bocca Di Lupo speaks to Courtney Taylor-Taylor

What vibe were after with the July 20 remixes - one with Jacob and the other with Jeremy - were there any influences or source material you used for reference?
With Jake we referenced "Never Met a Girl Like You Before" by that cat from Orange Juice. With Jeremy we referenced that Stranglers tune with the harpsichord (Golden Brown) that got so big again a few years back. Ultimately though, once ya get into a mix it doesn't really help listening to anything else. We only listen for fun at the beginning. Once you start a mix in earnest you're on your own.

Will you be producing/remixing any other Wolfmen tunes
Oh I'm sure I probably will. They know they can count on me and my guys to churn out cool stuff and since I don't have to pay for studio time at the Odditorium it saves them a lot of heartache as well as money.

July 20 is a birthday shared by you and Chris - are you typical Cancerians
Yeah I think we are. I know that I am fer sure. Very homebody. I'm obsessive about my interiors and they are not only spectacular but ergonomically borderline genius. They have to be, what with me having such a low tolerance for wasted time/space/energy. Another cliché' is being hard, cold and business-like on the outside but a Mr. Snugglycuddlyman on the inside. That pretty much describes my days to a T.

What’s been your wildest or most memorable birthday
Oh I really think that more amazing than all the sex drugs rock n roll birthdays that I can't quite remember was the fifty foot slip-n-slide on the hill behind my house for my birthday last year. All the booze and chemicals and partying in the world, all the drunk driving and sad lonely endings only happened because there wasn't a fifty footer in the back yard.

Are there any plans for a Dandy Wolfmen team-up? What cover would you use as an ice-breaker at a both band-jam
An icebreaker jam has to just sort of "happen" but if I were to script it into the
movie I'd have it be "Suffragette City"(sp) or "Bela Lugosi's Dead".

Have you managed to see any gems from Marco's legendary guitar collection.
Nope. Not seen Marco's guitars.

A big thank you is due to Courtney and Jo Ryan for making this interview happen

Plectrum is both a website and hard-copy magazine keeping a contemporary eye on all areas of the arts - fashion, film, music, books and performance. 'Surreal, transcendent, glamorous pop'

Don Letts Digs The Wolfmen

Old punks don't die - they just get cooler. Take John Cale, the New York Dolls or Don Letts, legendary author, film-maker, musician, DJ and now resident of BBC Six Music with his own Saturday night shindig - Culture Clash Radio

Let's make this clear Don Letts has pedigree. Originally, resident DJ at the infamous hangout 'The Roxy' where he turned punky young raggamuffins onto reggae and roots rockers. The former writing partner of Mick Jones in Big Audio Dynamite - knows how to turn a tune and maintains a refined ear for what rocks, rolls and rumbles.

So what made Don's most recent Culture Clash crate-digging playlist? A previously unheard cut from The Wolfmen titled July 20, a track taken from the upcoming album Married To The Eiffel Tower.

Believe us - July 20 is a scorcher of a summer sounding rock-pop nugget. Like the Velvet Underground bootleg remixed with the Beach Boys to make a space age sci-fi surf tune.

Turn on, tune in and bliss out here - July 20 is at 23:39

Jackie's Got Six Appeal

Jackie, Is It My Birthday? has been spun up on BBC 6 music again, this time on girl-about-the-arts Lauren Laverne's Saturday show. So what does the lovely Lauren think of Jackie? She "loves it" apparently - describing Jackie as "amazing", "cracking" and also seems heavily impressed with rocking roll call featured on the single - Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Sinéad O'Connor, and of course Marco and Chris.

But don't just take our word for it - tune in here at 53.24 to experience the full feature..

You can grab Jackie, Is It My Birthday? via iTunes by clicking on the pic below...

With The Radio On

New music from The Wolfmen continues to pick up plays from all around the airwaves.

Further to the new single Jackie Is It My Birthday? being playlisted on the Bob Fisher (BBC Tees), Gary Crowly (BBC London) and Gideon Coe (BBC 6 Music) shows. The soon-to-be released second single Cat Green Eyes made an appearance during David Quantick's recent spell filling in for Liz Kershaw on (BBC 6 Music) - during an interview with Marco and Chris on BBC 6 Music..

Whereas Jackie is an almost other-worldy duet - Cat Green Eyes is a slinking, walloping wall of sound that swishes, stomps and stamps like a champ, heavy with the hooks and harmonies of top quality pop. Imagine Slade going toe-to-toe with The Supremes in whirling swirl of feedback and flutes and you're getting close. Cat Green Eyes should be scheduled for an October release (production and remixing allowing) - however speed your way to the BBC iPlayer, and a preview play is available here until this coming Saturday - You'll find the interview starting at 1 hour 37 mins.

Wak This Space

One month from today 23rd March - sees the release of The Wolfmen's walloping new single Wak This Bass. It's the first release of 2009, and the favoured place to get your paws on the good stuff is....

The Wolfmen's online shop...

Wak This Bass is available as a Digital Download, CD single or 7" vinyl. Double A-sided with Cecilie, all formats are backed with two new tunes Lola and Room 103 (a track packed with a chorus catchier than bird flu). You may possibly have caught a sneaky peek of 103, during it's early doors appearance soundtracking this Heineken Ad'...

But the question is do The Wolfmen have anyone in mind, that needs a 'Wakking' ?

Chris...
The lyrics were inspired by some bullish bossy type who was driving me f***ing mad !! Ha ha ha - I love the vibe of this one - and it's so good to play live. The harp solo - was inspired by'Groovin' With Mr. Bloe' . We recorded this live at Raezor and Steve Musters mixed it, with some great drumming by swizzy.

And if you haven't heard Wak That Bass - you can taste test a minute and a bit below..

Wolf-Fact:The cover of Wak is lifted from the April 1980 edition of New Statesmen, starring Wolfman Chris

Hot Dogging

There's a line spoken by Eno on his debut album - 'Oh cheeky, cheeky - oh naughty, sneaky' - that could almost be a thumbnail summary for one steamy scene appearing in a new brand new, Brit-flick - 'Dogging:A Love Story' - that's hitting UK cinemas this spring

So why are we previewing this romping 'n' rolling snippet of cinematic action on the Bocca Blog? Because Director Simon Ellis, has chosen to soundtrack this moment of 'in car entertainment' with The Wolfmen's cover of Eno's 'Needles In The Camel's Eye'

But, be warned sensitive bloggers and browsers, it is slightly lively, so best be discreet when having a peep or two...

Radio Wolfmen

It's all sounding wolfishly good over at NME Radio...

As well as Cecilie being the subject of some heavy rotation on the NME's Skins Radio (a tie in with the super-trendy C4 programme), this coming Thursday (5th of Feb) sees The Wolfmen appearing on Neil Cole's show (from 11:30 am UK time) for a live interview, which you can catch by redirecting your dials right here...

But for now, let's have another listen to the tune that's getting all the good reports - well, an alt.non-album-version, mixed by Steve Musters and taken from the Limited Edition EP..

Cecilie

Or perhaps a peep at the Hills/Richards Edit of the video
